This is probably one of the most entertaining books on writing I've ever read.  

Techniques of the Selling Writer by Dwight V. Swain: 
It is not the easiest read, but if you decide to tackle it, you'll reap the benefits.  It's full of practical tips on writing, including the building blocks of writing good fiction.

GMC:  Goal, Motivation, and Conflict by Debra Dixon:
Another great book on the fundamentals of fiction.
